"You might not afford an original O'Keefe, or a Robert Indiana, but you can afford a Sunny Miller. What moves you? Much is possible." Juanita Nelson / Public Art & Discourse, Proposed Oct. 1 2018 In preparation for Public Art that will enrich community, I painted a Memorial Portrait of Juanita Nelson painted in the spring of 2015. Many of us walked behind a Jazz band, New Orleans style, on our way to her memorial service at Greenfield Middle School, or lined the route, waving. With shared thinking many more might be moved by her conscience, her thinking and her lifestyle, as proposed for consideration for community support in 2019. We can honor her organic farming & food production, depth of conscience, and neighborly discourse, perhaps for generations. See the Common Good website for more information on 2019 grant applications in the realms of sustainable food production & economics, cultural change, the arts, etc. Please consider joining and making your vote count! A Pop-Up, Public Art Experiment - Juanita's Visage Appeared in Greenfield
In August 2018 many in Greenfield who knew Juanita enjoyed reflecting on their connections, shared inspirations or more recent next steps. Others around town, and among the 500 served amazing local foods at the Free Harvest Supper had no idea who Juanita was. Even the new President of Greenfield Community College took this opportunity to be introduced to Juanita's life story, while enjoying the fruits of her visionary planning some fifteen years ago. New public art -- rich with context, amplified by discourse and journal entries -- can help us extend Juanita's talent for promoting positive cultural change into a legacy reaching farther into our communities. Has Juanita's story inspired your life yet? Let's pass the talking stick and see.
Public Art Can Bring the Best of our Past Forward "Lenaswa," a Bison sculpture with a Myaamia name was unveiled in Lafayette. "Lenaswa," a Bison sculpture with a Myaamia name was unveiled on Main Street in Lafayette for Indiana's Bicentennial. Depictions on each side are inspired by the work of George Winter in 1837. His beautifully written journal is housed at the Tippecanoe County Historical Association. Work by artists Sunny Miller & Linda Vanderkolk, and the purchase of the sculpture are sponsored by Undercover Storage, 2740 North Ninth Street, in Lafayette. Wnen installed at that location, people traveling to Prophetstown State Park, to the Feast of the Hunter's Moon at Fort Ouiatenon, or the Indian Fiddlers' Gathering in Battleground, may want to stop and take a closer look. The Bison-tennial project is co-ordinated by United Way. Photo by Charles Jenks. You are invited to use this text and photo for any social media postings.
